Kumiko vs macOS window tiling

Apple added window tiling in macOS Sequoia. For many people it is enough. On a big screen, its limits show quickly.

Updated

Short answer: Built-in tiling covers halves and quarters on any Mac for free. Kumiko adds thirds, sizes that suit ultrawides, whole-screen layouts, Resume and the AI command bar.

What macOS window tiling does well

  • Free and built in
  • Drag a window to an edge or corner to tile it
  • fn⌃ + arrow shortcuts, plus arrangements for two or four windows
  • Nothing to install

What Kumiko adds

  • Arrow keys that know your screen. Hold ⌃⌥ and press ← or →. Press again to go from ½ to ⅔ to ⅓. On a 21:9 or 32:9 ultrawide the first press gives a third, and ↑ gives you the centre column.
  • Six layouts for the whole screen. Focus centre, Halves, Thirds, Studio, Stack and Columns place every window at once with ⌃⌥1 to ⌃⌥6.
  • Resume. Close the lid and Kumiko brings back every browser tab, the project folder in your editor and the folder each terminal was in. It works with 45 apps.
  • The AI command bar. Press ⌥ Space and type "review PR 482 and reply to the team". Kumiko picks the windows, opens what's missing, brings the right tab forward and shows you the plan first.
  • Meeting and Share-safe. Calls move under your camera with notes below; private apps blur when you share your screen.

Which one should you pick?

Pick macOS window tiling if

You use a laptop or a standard 16:9 monitor and halves are enough.

Pick Kumiko if

You have a wide or big screen where halves waste space and you want thirds, centre columns and whole layouts.

Kumiko is €30 once for 2 Macs, and the first 25 launch licences are €9. It works on macOS 14 or later.

Questions

What are the macOS window tiling shortcuts?

With the window you want selected: fn⌃← and fn⌃→ for left and right halves, fn⌃↑ and fn⌃↓ for top and bottom, fn⌃F to fill, fn⌃C to centre and fn⌃R to go back. Add ⇧ to arrange two windows side by side.

Can I use Kumiko and macOS tiling together?

Yes. They use different shortcuts (Kumiko uses ⌃⌥ with the arrows). If dragging to an edge feels doubled up, turn off "Tile by dragging windows to screen edges" in System Settings › Desktop & Dock.

Does macOS tiling do thirds?

No. Built-in tiling does halves and quarters only. Kumiko does thirds and two-thirds, and on an ultrawide the first press gives you a third.
